The Basics of Poker

Poker is a card game in which players wager money against each other on the outcome of a hand. It has some strategic elements but the majority of winning is based on luck. The objective is to win the pot (the sum of all bets) by having a better hand than your opponents. This can be done by having the best cards, or bluffing your way to victory by getting your opponents to fold because they fear you have a strong hand.

Before the cards are dealt each player must place a forced bet which is called an ante or blind bet. This is to ensure that only the strongest players are left at the table. Once the antes and blinds have been placed, each player is dealt 2 cards which are hidden from other players. These are called their hole cards or pocket cards. The betting begins with the player to the left of the big blind.

Three more cards are then dealt face up at the center of the table which are known as the flop. The betting then resumes with the player to the left of the button.

Four of a kind is the highest natural hand. A straight flush is five consecutive cards in order of rank (such as 5-6-7-8-9-10) of the same suit. A full house is a pair plus three of a kind. The high card breaks ties.

A good poker player is able to extract the maximum value from their winning hands and minimise losses from their losing ones. This is called min-max strategy. Good poker players also use other information about their opponents, such as their tells. These may be subtle clues such as blinking more than usual or chewing gum which can be a sign of nerves.
