Poker is a card game that has many variations. It can be played with as few as two people or as many as ten. The optimal number is six to eight players. There are four different types of hands. The lowest is called a pair of aces. The other is a straight flush. In a tie, the person with the highest pair wins. If two players have four of a kind of the same rank, they break the tie. The best hand in poker is a five of a kind. If a wild card is used, this hand will beat a straight flush. The highest unmatched cards and secondary pairs break ties.
Each player starts the game by being dealt a hand. The dealer is not one of the players and is represented by a white plastic disk. In casual games, the dealer is the house. The dealer deals the cards to each player in turn. During the first round of betting, the dealer “burns” one card from the top of the deck. Then, the first three community cards are dealt face-up.
After placing an ante, players may place their bets into the pot. The player with the highest hand wins the pot. The betting occurs clockwise. Each player has three options when betting: raise, fold, or fold.
