Poker

Poker is a card game played by two or more players. The objective is to win a pot, or sum of bets placed by players in a betting round. This is achieved by having the highest ranking hand at the end of a round. The number of cards dealt to each player and the rules of the particular game determines the type of hand that can be made. Players may only place bets if they believe that the bet will have positive expected value, or for strategic reasons such as bluffing. With the exception of initial forced bets, money is only placed into the pot by a player when it has positive expected value.

When playing poker, you should always focus on maximizing your value hands. This means raising frequently when you think your hand is ahead of the calling range of other players. Attempting to outwit other players is often a waste of time and can backfire on you.

Trying to bluff against sticky players can be very dangerous for your profitability. These types of players love to call any kind of board, and they also tend to chase ludicrous draws in the hopes that you’ll be bluffing. Trying to force these players to make a bad decision by provoking them can only end in disaster. It’s a much better idea to simply charge them a premium for their aggression, and bet strongly when you have strong value hands.
